R.E.M. To Release Greatest Hits Collection Nov. 14

R.E.M. may have called it quits earlier this week, but fans can still expect one more release from the band. Sort of. The group will offer up a new career-spanning greatest hits compilation on November 14 via Warner Bros.
Which basically means that this breakup has been in the works for a while since the band�s record label is already preparing with a box set to console you. The collection will be titled Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982-2011. The release will contain tracks from the group�s 31-year career plus several new songs that weren�t finished until after the completion of their last album, Collapse Into Now. Further details on the collection, presumably including a tracklisting, will be announced on Monday.
R.E.M. announced their split on Wednesday. The band wrote a terse statement on their official website to reveal the news. �As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band,� they wrote. �We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all that we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.�

Each band member also offered their own perspective on what appears to be an amicable demise. �A wise man once said� �the skill in attending a party is knowing when it�s time to leave,� wrote frontman Michael Stipe. �We built something extraordinary together. Chris Cornell Interview

As Soundgarden fans wait for a new album with great anticipation, frontman Chris Cornell has something to tide them over. The musician recently wrote and recorded a new track, �The Keeper,� for the official soundtrack to Machine Gun Preacher, a film based on the life of humanitarian Sam Childers. Cornell, who previously penned the theme song, �You Know My Name,� to the 2006 James Bond flick Casino Royale, spoke with us about how this opportunity came about and what it was like to write such an emotionally heavy track. Plus, Cornell offers a teaser of what we can expect from the upcoming Soundgarden disc� and when we might expect it.

How did you get involved with Machine Gun Preacher?
A friend of mine is a good friend of [director] Mark Forrester and he had heard about the story and read the script. He came up with the idea to have Mark have me write a song or some music for the film. Mark liked that idea. That lead to me reading the script and I was really blown away by the scope of the story. I could have written an album�s worth of songs following that. It was actually very difficult to focus on one song because of the scope of the story.

Did you get to see the movie before you wrote the song?
In this case I didn�t. They had just started filming the week I spoke to the director about it. It isn�t to say that I need to see it but it would help in the sense of knowing whether I�d gotten the right mood. You get a visual sense of a song when you see it and I think that can help. What really helped me was going on the Angels of East Africa website, which is the website started by Sam Childers for his organization� That�s really where I got in touch with what the visual mood would be like.

Did that make the process easier?
Well, it�s not a life I�m living. It doesn�t include experiences that I�ve had so it isn�t like writing a song for my own album. It�s definitely a collaboration with the filmmaker, but it�s also trying to capture something I can create honestly without actually having had those experiences. Seeing the photos of the children and the orphanage really helped me get in touch with that.
It sounds like this was a much different experience than writing a song for a James Bond film.
Yeah! That had its challenges but as a songwriter I�m always going to try to find some emotional in-road. Otherwise it�s not exciting to me and I�m not really interested in it. Being able to concentrate on this first book that [James Bond author] Ian Fleming wrote where this character appears and how he�s still human then were some of things I really liked about it. I loved the film and I love Daniel Craig as an actor. But I wasn�t worried about making any mistakes in terms of how the song would come across lyrically since I didn�t feel necessarily that I owed anybody anything. In this case, I think the story is more about the children than it is anybody else and I felt like I had a responsibility to create a simple song that would get people to at least listen and hopefully, in the context of the film, be moved enough where they might want to get a download where all the proceeds go to the charity. [The proceeds] go directly to the children that the song is about. So this song definitely carried more weight for me emotionally.

What are your plans for the rest of the year beyond this song?
I have some shows with Soundgarden. Soundgarden is finishing our next album. I have a lot of acoustic solo touring as well. Pretty much both those things happening nonstop until the end of the year.

Sometime in the spring. Right now we�re talking about May.

Up-and-coming pop artist Jasmine V. has released a new mixtape via her website. The mixtape, which is available for free here, is titled S(HE) BE(LIE)VE(D), and features appearances from Tyga (�So Silly�) and Ryan Leslie (�Hello�).

The singer, who is from San Jose, CA, has previously been known for starring in Justin Bieber�s �Baby� video as well as opening part of his recent My World Tour. V. also performed the National Anthem before the Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight this past week. The singer�s performance has since garnered significant popularity online. V. is also currently recording original material, presumably for an album.
The Poplist with Jacuzzi Boys
A couple weeks ago the Florida-based rock & roll combo Jacuzzi Boys released their latest record Glazin�. I sure do hope you picked up a copy because it�s more fun than a busload of cheerleaders and makes everyone else playing reverbed-up, ramshackle and loose R&R look like they are trying too hard and getting nowhere. We asked them for a list of things they�ve been digging lately and Danny and Gabriel came up with some pretty boss stuff�..

Tattoos (Danny): Now this may seem like a funny choice, seeing as how I don�t have any tattoos, but lately I�ve been pretty interested in looking at, and learning more about traditional American tattooing. Now I really don�t know much about it, or know artists by name or anything, but watching the Tattoo Age special on Dan Santoro/Smith Street Tattoo Parlour really sparked my interest. All the guys at that shop hand paint their own flash and it�s really some of the raddest stuff I�ve seen in a while� The sheets just look incredible! And their aesthetic and approach to tattooing seems to have a certain respect for the past that I find pretty neat.
Cuban Coffee (Danny): One of the few things, if not the only thing I truly miss while out on tour. You can find a walk up window that serves it on almost any street corner in Miami, and no mater what time of day it is, it�s always a good idea to have some. It�s typically served in tiny little cups and it�s pretty much all you need� The coffee itself isn�t that strong though, but it�s loaded with a bunch of sugar. Every time I meet someone that�s never had any, I feel a slight obligation to introduce.
Christian Patterson (Danny): I�ve been a fan of his work for quite some time now, and it�s getting better and better! His first body of work, Sound Affects, dealt with the city of Memphis, Tennessee and how music plays a major part of everyday life there. And he just recently completed his most recent project Redheaded Peckerwood, in which he follows the path of two late 1950�s teenage serial killers and sorta creates his own fiction within the real-life facts. I encourage everyone to take a look at his pictures, you�ll be sucked right in.
�Omaha� by Waylon Jennings (Danny): I think I first heard this song from our friend Rydel. He had made a mix CD of his favorite country tunes and we just about played the thing to death in the van� I remember liking the song, but it didn�t get its hooks in me until while later� I�m not sure I even knew it was Waylon Jennings, actually! Anyway, I finally got around to listening to Honky Tonk Heroes, and while I�m a big fan of the entire record, I just can�t get enough of �Omaha!� For me, it just has that special something that makes me want to play it over and over and sing along at the top of my lungs� This may seem a bit cliched, but it makes me want to be in a bar somewhere, drink in hand, drunkenly dancing and singing along with a woman that may be a bit too old for me.
The Point! by Harry Nilsson (Gabriel): So I finally saw the Harry Nilsson documentary Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin� About Him?)� It�s amazing. I found out about The Point!, his sixth album & animated film, through the documentary. I watched it soon after & was blown away� So cool! Really entertaining, silly, trippy & and smart. �Me and My Arrow� has been stuck in my head for weeks.
He-Man & the Masters of the Universe (Gabriel): I used to own every episode on VHS tapes, but I somehow lost them. I was so obsessed with He-Man as a kid that I would wake up an hour earlier than I had to to catch every episode. I had every single toy too. Netflix just made the series �watch instantly� & I�ve been seriously going down memory lane. It�s such a trip trying to remember what happens in each episode. It�s still so cool to me� what an awesomely weird cartoon.
